Sunscreen Myths. What are the Facts.

Social media moves fast. Science takes a little longer.
Every few weeks, a new sunscreen claim seems to appear online. Natural oils instead of sunscreen.A tan as protection.Sunscreen as a source of toxins.Supplements instead of SPF. Some claims contain a small grain of truth. Others don't. The problem is that a confident social-media post can make complicated science sound remarkably simple.
The American Academy of Dermatology reported in 2026 that misinformation about sun protection is influencing some people to reduce or stop using sunscreen, with particularly strong effects among younger adults.
So let's look at some of the most common claims.
Myth 1: “Natural oils give you enough SPF.”
Natural oils may have various properties, but that doesn't make them a reliable substitute for a properly formulated and tested sunscreen.
The important question isn't whether an ingredient has some UV-absorbing properties.
It is whether the finished product provides consistent, tested protection at the claimed level.
Myth 2: “SPF is toxic.”
This is a much more complicated claim than social media often suggests. UV filters permitted for use in sunscreens are subject to regulatory requirements and safety assessments. The relevant question should therefore be about the specific ingredient, its permitted use and the evidence surrounding it, rather than treating all sunscreen ingredients as one category. Science rarely works in absolutes.
Myth 3: “A tan protects your skin.”
A tan is a biological response to UV exposure. It is not equivalent to wearing sunscreen. UV exposure can damage skin even when you don't develop a visible sunburn. WHO notes that UV exposure is carcinogenic and that both cumulative exposure and episodes of intense exposure contribute to skin-cancer risk.
A tan may look healthy. It doesn't mean the underlying exposure was harmless.
Myth 4: “If I don't burn, I don't need SPF.”
Sunburn is only one visible consequence of UV exposure. UVA contributes to photoageing and pigmentation, while UV exposure overall contributes to skin-cancer risk. Protection should therefore not be based solely on whether your skin turns red.
Myth 5: “Sunscreen blocks all vitamin D.”
Vitamin D production is one of the recognised beneficial effects of UVB exposure. But that doesn't mean deliberate overexposure is necessary. WHO notes that excessive UV exposure carries health risks, while vitamin D can also be obtained through diet and supplementation when medically appropriate.
The answer isn't “avoid all sunlight” — nor is it “get as much as possible.” It's balance.
Myth 6: “Sunscreen pills replace sunscreen.”
Supplements cannot simply be treated as a replacement for topical sun protection. For meaningful UV protection, the established approach remains a combination of shade, clothing and sunscreen when appropriate.
The science is usually less dramatic than the headline.
That's actually a good thing. You don't need to fear sunscreen. You don't need to fear sunlight either.
You simply need to understand what the evidence says, what it doesn't say, and which claims are actually supported by testing and research. Because when it comes to your skin, confidence is good. Evidence is better.
