Your SPF Has a Blind Spot

Sunlight doesn't stop where SPF stops
When we talk about sun protection, we usually talk about UVB, UVA and SPF. But the solar spectrum continues beyond 400 nm — into visible light.
And science is increasingly showing that visible light is not simply harmless background illumination. It can interact with the skin in ways that matter, particularly when it comes to pigmentation and photoageing.
400 nm is a boundary — not a wall
Ultraviolet radiation extends to approximately 400 nm. Beyond that begins visible light, spanning roughly 400–700 nm. The shorter wavelengths of visible light, often referred to as high-energy visible light or blue light, have received increasing attention in dermatology. Research shows that visible light can stimulate pigmentation and oxidative stress, with particularly pronounced effects in people with darker skin types and those prone to conditions such as melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
The important point is that SPF does not tell you how a product performs against visible light. Current sunscreen testing and labelling remain primarily focused on UV protection, and there is still no universally standardised method for measuring visible-light protection.
Why does visible light matter for pigmentation?
Visible light can activate melanocytes — the cells responsible for producing melanin. Studies have shown that high-energy visible light can produce persistent pigmentation, particularly in darker skin types.
This is especially relevant for people dealing with melasma, hyperpigmentation or post-inflammatory pigmentation, where visible light can contribute to persistent or recurring darkening.
This doesn't mean that visible light is "bad" or that we should avoid it. It means that our understanding of photoprotection is becoming more sophisticated.
Beyond conventional SPF
A conventional SPF test tells you primarily about UVB protection. Broad-spectrum sunscreen adds UVA protection — both essential. But some modern filter systems go further.
